Death Hoax Of Tennis Legend Steffi Graf Goes Viral

BOOM found that a screenshot of a fake website carrying the news of Steffi Graf’s death fueled the death hoax. The screenshot of the article is being shared on social platforms with many expressing grief and shock at the sudden demise of Steffi Graf. BOOM however found that the website sportybird247 is clickbait and not a genuine site. Additionally, there are no confirmed reports of Graff’s demise or her suffering from any reported illness. Stefanie Maria Graf, better known as Steffi Graf is a former tennis player and twenty-two times tennis grand slam champion. The German women’s tennis player is married to former men’s tennis player Andre Agassi. Married since 2001, the couple together have two children. Facebook posts have used a screenshot of the article featuring two of Steffi Graf’s photographs with Rest In Peace written on it. The headline reads, “***SAD NEWS: Sefanie Maria Graf, German Former Tennis Star, Dies at Age 55**”. The post further states, “In a shocking turn of events, the tennis world mourns the loss of Steffi Graf, the German tennis prodigy whose unparalleled career captivated fans globally. Graf, 55 passed away.” A Facebook user sharing the viral screenshot wrote, “Tennis queen no more.” Click here to see post and click here for an archive. The article is also circulating on X with many believing it to be true. Click here for an archive of the X post. The post is viral on Whatsapp. BOOM also received the news article with a verification request on its tipline number. Fact Check BOOM ran a related keyword search on Google but was unable to find any credible news reports regarding Graf’s health or demise. We then found the article on sportybird247.com which had several red flags. News about Graf’s death was also reported on another dubious site, with the headline: SAD REPORT: Ex Tennis star Steffi Graf passed away at age of 55yrs. Upon clicking, we found that the site publishes jokes and humorous content. It did not confirm the cause of her death but mentions the possibility of a ‘long term illness’. The article however does not state in details about the long-term illness that Graf was reportedly suffering from. It further mentioned about the tennis world mourning the loss of Steffi Graf, however without evidence or posts to support the same. We visited Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), Wimbledon, Australian Open, Roland Garros and US Open official social media handles but did not find any post about the former tennis player’s untimely death. We then checked the website where articles with similar headlines about sportspersons suffering from untimely deaths can be spotted. The website also does not have any information in their “About Us” section and they do not feature any author’s name on the published articles. Below the blank “About Us” section can be seen. All the articles in the website are attributed to sportybird247; theu do not have separate authors’ information. We further checked Graf’s husband Andre Agassi’s official Instagram account where on July 20, 2024 we found a post about his visit to the Tennis Hall of Fame museum. FACT CHECK The original video is from September 2023, when a YouTuber named Akash Sagar lost his footing over a slippery rock and fell in a river, however he did not die, moments later he was seen being pulled out to safety. It is not clear if the video was shot as a prank. Listen to this Article A video showing a youth slip and fall into a river while recording a video, is being shared on WhatsApp with a false claim that a young man drowned while shooting reels at a waterfall. BOOM found that the original video is from September 2023, when a YouTuber named Akash Sagar lost his footing over a slippery rock and fell in a river, however he did not die, moments later he was seen being pulled out to safety. It is not clear if the video was shot as a prank. The viral video is being shared following the tragic accident, which claimed the life of Aanvi Kamdar, a 27-year-old chartered accountant and social media influencer from Malad, Mumbai. Kamdar died after falling 300 feet from a hillock while allegedly making a reel near the Kumbhe waterfall in Mangaon, Raigad district, the Indian Express reported on July 18, 2024. A series of drowning incidents near waterfalls have been reported from Maharashtra in recent weeks as heavy rainfall battered the state. The video is being shared on Facebook with the caption, “What’s wrong with these people..??? One more person drowned just while making ‘mad’ reels..!!!” Click here to view, and here for an archive. BOOM also received the viral video on our WhatsApp tipline number (7700906111) FACT-CHECK BOOM found that the viral video is from September 2023, when a YouTuber slipped and fell into a river but survived. The YouTuber can be seen pulled out to safety after slipping from a rock he was standing on, in the original video. However, it was not clear if the incident was staged. Taking a hint from the replies to an X post, we found the original video was posted on YouTube on September 26, 2023, by the channel Akash Sagar with the clickbait caption, “Akash sagar last video? – Akash sagar vlogs” In the video, Sagar can be seen making his way to other large rocks and another youth comes to pull him out of the water. The YouTuber also posted a shorter version of the video that only shows him falling, on his Instagram handle on September 25, 2023. FACT CHECK The video is a deepfake, created by synthesising Biden’s voice and manipulating his lip movements to match the fake audio. The original video was an address given by Biden on July 15, 2024, after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. PBS News, whose logo appears in the altered video, confirmed the video is fake and condemned its unauthorized use. An AI deepfake detector also identified the audio as AI-generated. BOOM found that the clip is a deepfake made by using an artificial intelligence (AI) generated voice clone of Biden. PBS News, whose logo can be seen in the viral video, also tweeted that the video is a deepfake and condemned the manipulated video. Biden, on July 21, 2024, announced that he was ending his re-election campaign amid growing calls within his Democratic Party calling for him to step down after he showed signs of cognitive decline with advanced age. The 81-year old, in a post on X, stated he will remain as president until his term ends in January 2025 and will address the nation this week. The US President also endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination. The 22 seconds video was posted on X by the handle Prison Mitch (@MidnightMitch) with the caption, “Breaking Now: President Joe Biden makes his first video address following dropping out of the Presidential race.” In the viral video Biden can be hear abusing saying, “My fellow Americans, I want to take a moment to address the hateful shit you have been talking about me. Many of you have said I am suffering from brain worms, or that I have apple sauce for brains, Well f*** you, you are all bunch of f*****, end of quote repeat the line, so enjoy President crackels or president b****juice, I really don’t give two f**** anymore, bye now.” The doctored clip is being shared as a joke with many in the comments acknowledging that it is a deepfake. The video has telltale signs of being a deepfake such as change in the tone of Biden’s voice after he says “My fellow Americans”, and his lip movements which start blurring and are out of sync with the voice track of the clip. The viral video has been taken from an address Biden gave on July 15, 2024, after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In the original video, we can see the same background and hand moments of Biden as in the viral video.
