Justin Herbert is widely regarded as one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL.
The Los Angeles Chargers’ star has set numerous franchise and league records during his first four seasons in the NFL. The Chargers have anointed him as their franchise quarterback, evidenced by the five-year, $262.5 million contract extension he signed last summer.
Herbert has thrown for 17,223 yards, with 114 touchdowns while completing 66.6% of his passes during his career. He amassed those numbers while having a very talented group of players at the skill positions. Last season, Herbert had Keenan Allen and Mike Williams at wide receiver. Austin Ekeler was the primary running back and Gerald Everett was the tight end. Those four players accounted for 57% of Herbert’s completions, passing yards and touchdowns in 2023.
All four players are gone as the Chargers begin training camp on Wednesday. The loss of those players prompted cbssoport.com’s Shanna McCarristan to predict Herbert will be among the quarterbacks who will “underperform” during the 2024 season.
“Herbert has the unenviable task of trying to produce this season without Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, his top-two wideouts since entering the NFL in 2020. He’s starting over with a receiving corps that includes two rookies and a second-year player (Quentin Johnson) who underperformed during his rookie season. Oh, Herbert also lost running back Austin Ekeler, who averaged 70.5 catches per year during his time with Herbert.”
Not only will Herbert be throwing to a bunch of relatively inexperienced receivers and a new running back, he’ll also be learning yet another offensive system under a new coaching staff.
New head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman are implementing a new run-oriented offense. Herbert will operate under his third head coach (four if interim coach Giff Smith is added) in his first four seasons. He’s also adjusting to his fifth offensive coordinator during the span.
With a new head coach, offensive coordinator, system and inexperienced players wide receiver, Herbert has a big task ahead of him to guide the Chargers to a playoff berth in 2024.
