Serena faced a heart-wrenching personal struggle that went beyond the game. The loss of her sister, Yetunde Price, was a devastating blow that shook her to her core.

The Williams family lost Yetunde Price on September 14, 2003, in a tragic shootout. Price was the half-sister of Serena and Venus and was the eldest of three. She also served as the personal assistant to the Williams sisters, besides being a part owner of a modest hair salon. Sharing such a close bond could mean a lot to many and hence, the news of her demise shattered the entire family including the legendary tennis players, Serena Williams and Venus Williams. And for the former World No. 1, it is still a challenging task to overcome the grief.

 

The latest documentary on the life of Serena Williams, “In the Arena: Serena Williams,” was released on July 10. The first three episodes of the docuseries are now out. In one of these episodes, the tennis player can be seen in tears as she recalls her sister and her death. “We got so close in those last six months. It was a miracle that I broke my muscle…. We were able to spend so much time together, and it was that I’ll never forget.”

Williams tore the quadriceps tendon in her left knee and underwent surgery in early August that year, which kept her away from the tennis courts for many weeks. Williams further revealed the challenges that the phase brought to the family.

When quizzed about the most difficult thing, Williams said, “I think the hardest part was telling the kids.” Price was a mother of three children, two boys, and a girl, all of whom were under the age of 12 when she was killed. For the unversed, Price was returning back from Compton, Calif., to her home in Corona, along with her fiance Rolland Wormley, when her white SUV was fired by gunshots, hitting the back of Price’s head. The alleged shooter, Robert Maxfield, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2006.

But this is not the first time when Serena let her true emotions out about her sister’s demise. Serena and Venus opened a resource center in the name of their late sister in 2016. “We definitely wanted to honor our sister’s memory because she was a great sister; she was our oldest sister, and, obviously, she meant a lot to us,” Serena said then, according to The Root. “And it meant a lot to us, to myself and to Venus and my other sisters as well, Isha and Lyndrea, that we’ve been wanting to do something for years in memory of her, especially the way it happened, a violent crime.” And the bond that the sisters shared was equally laudable.

Yetunde Price shared an adorable bond with her sisters. In fact, Serena admitted that Price changed her diapers when she was a kid. And this close bond was in fact admitted by Prine herself in an interview with People in August 2003, shortly before her demise.

Speaking about whether Venus and Serena’s fame put the spotlight away from her within the family and if she had regrets about it, Price responded in denial. “They’re still my sisters,” she said. “We don’t get into the fame thing too much when we’re all together as a family.”

 

While her departure is still a challenging task for Serena to cope with, the bond they shared still resonates within the family. And the statements of Serena Williams time and again about missing her elder sister are a testament to their bond and love.
