“Unforgettable” – Serena Williams gushes over her Paris Olympics experience of carrying the Olympic torch alongside Rafael Nadal at opening ceremony
Serena Williams recently said her experience at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony was “unforgettable.” The 42-year-old was present with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and daughter, Olympia, for the commencement of the marquee event.
Williams looked elegant in a red bodycon dress and accessorized her look with a purse. The 23-time Grand Slam champion was accompanied by nine-time gold medalist Carl Lewis, Rafael Nadal, and Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci in a boat in which they carried the Olympic torch through the Seine River.Williams and Nadal eventually passed the torch to former French tennis player Amelie Mauresmo. It was already raining during their journey, and Serena Williams looked uncomfortable on the boat at some stages.
The 42-year-old recently revealed her experience of being at the opening ceremony. She cherished being part of the event despite the rain causing her eyelashes to come loose.
“Have you ever had an unforgettable moment? That was yesterday for me. Truly unforgettable. From being part of an amazing Open Ceremony at the Paris Olympics-to riding in the boat in the rain-and it was pouring! So much so my lashes came right on off. Unforgettable!” Williams wrote on X.

Serena Williams’ husband and Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian, was also present at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Due to the rainy weather in the French capital, Ohanian held an umbrella over his wife and daughter at one point, which was captured on cameras.
A commentator from Eurosport, who was unaware of who Ohanian was, mistakenly referred to him as William’s umbrella holder. The debacle spread quickly on social media and eventually reached Ohanian.
“She looks absolutely incredible, she’s got someone just behind us holding an umbrella. Those are the levels you aspire to, to have an actual umbrella holder behind you,” the commentator said.
Serena Williams’ husband, however, hilariously reacted to the commentator’s error on Instagram. The 41-year-old shared an image featuring his wife and daughter, adding his reactions in the caption.
“Olympia. Serena. Serena’s Personal Umbrella Holder.😂 Let the games begin! I’ll be watching a lot of T&F (track and field) to soak up @athlos inspiration.🥇”
Serena Williams and Ohanian met in 2015 and got married two years later. The couple welcomed Olympia one month before their marriage. They also welcomed another daughter, Adira River Ohanian, who was born in August 2023.
