Iga Swiatek has revealed that she will be a bit more humble after winning the bronze medal in the singles at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The World No. 1 was the overwhelming favorite to win the gold. However, she was denied by the brilliant China’s Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals.
Swiatek had never lost at the Roland Garros courts since 2021, a place where she had always produced her best tennis. She had beaten Jasmine Paolini in a straight sets to claim the French Open in June. At the Paris Olympics, she began in her usual scintillating style of play beating Irina-Camelia Bagu, Diane Parry, and Wang Xinyu.
While she failed to produce the same brilliance against Danielle Collins, she somehow managed to win after the American retired in the end. Against Qinwen, she was far from her best as the Chinese sixth seed defeated her 6-2, 7-5. She was left in tears after the shocking defeat but bounced back in 24 hours to claim the bronze medal against Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the third-place match.
Despite ending the Summer Games on a positive note, the Polish star admitted that she will be a bit more humble going forward.
If I hadn’t played today (Friday, for bronze), I might have cried for a week. so I needed to get it together. I probably cried for like six hours yesterday so, it was really tough. It’s like my heart has been broken. (…) I think this will give me a bit more humility.

The Pole has won four titles this season, including the French Open. She was among the favorites to claim her second Grand Slam at Wimbledon but only reached the third round before losing to Yulia Putintseva.

Iga Swiatek has admitted she will work harder after claiming bronze at the Paris Olympics. The 23-year-old has yet to overcome the shocking defeat against China’s Zheng Qinwen on Thursday (August 1).
She has been impressive so far this season, despite not advancing to the later stages at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon. She will now turn her attention to the summer hard court season.
I’m happy anyway that I pushed through that and I’m here with a bronze medal. I was maybe a little bit too arrogant with myself because I thought that I handled so much pressure before that I think I’m going to handle this one as well. And now I actually am really motivated to work even harder.

The Pole has withdrawn from the Canadian Open, which gets underway next week. She will be looking forward to competing at the Cincinnati Open and then the US Open.

Lorenzo Musetti wanted to finally revenge his three consecutive defeats to Novak Djokovic this season when he met the Serbian in the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. But unfortunately for the Italian, the result was no different. On Friday (August 2), the crowd at Court Philippe Chatrier saw Djokovic break his Olympic semifinal jinx to finally secure a berth in the gold medal match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Musetti. The 22-year-old later explained the Serb’s technical skills that make him a dangerous player on the court. It’s true that on his forehand, he always waits for the right moment to change direction and try a winning shot. Afterward, you can say what you want about Djokovic, but his return of serve remains an incredible shot, it’s the most impressive thing. The way he manages to return serves where 90% of players can’t even do it or at least put the server in a good position, that’s what makes the difference. Lorenzo Musetti said at the press conference Musetti has the chance to clinch the bronze medal for his country when he takes on Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, who was easily beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the other semifinals. The World No.16 will become the first Italian to win an Olympic medal in tennis singles since 1924 if he wins the bronze medal match. Novak Djokovic is the oldest, while Carlos Alcaraz is the youngest to play in Olympic tennis singles’ final match Novak Djokovic failed to overcome the hurdle in his previous three Olympics semifinals, for he lost to Rafael Nadal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics (but later won the bronze medal), to Andy Murray in the 2012 London Games, and to Alexander Zverev in the 2016 Rio Games. The Serb now has the chance to take home the gold medal if he beats Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday’s final. Cruising past Lorenzo Musetti made Djokovic the oldest player to secure a berth in an Olympic singles final. At 21, Alcaraz became the youngest player to do so and is already deemed as the ‘favorite’ to clinch the gold for Spain, given that Djokovic has not won a title yet this season, while the youngster lifted two major ones, the French Open and the Wimbledon. Djokovic and Alcaraz met in this year’s Wimbledon final. Rather than a blockbuster contest, it was a one-sided affair as the seven-time Wimbledon champion lost in straight sets, which saw the Spaniard win his second consecutive title at SW19.

Late last month, Blue Jackets winger Patrik Laine exited the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program which allows for there to be contact between Laine and Columbus. With a known desire for a change of scenery, the team has granted permission for the winger to talk to other teams as well. However, there hasn’t been much interest in Laine’s services just yet. GM Don Waddell told Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch earlier this week that at this point, only one team has contacted him to express interest in acquiring his services. Given where we are in the offseason, Waddell isn’t particularly surprised nor does he expect the situation to change in the near future: “At this time of the year, people are less responsive. So, I don’t really know. I think it’s going to play out for a while.” Laine’s situation is well-known at this point. He played in just 18 games last season before being shut down due to shoulder surgery in December; he entered the assistance program a little more than a month after that. The 26-year-old has been a high-end scoring threat in the past and is only two years removed from recording 56 points in as many games; he came close to the point-per-game mark in an injury-marred 2022-23 campaign as well. However, Laine struggled in his limited action last season, notching just six goals and three assists. Suffice it to say, this isn’t a situation where Columbus could be trading him at peak value. Further complicating things is his contract, one which carries an AAV of $8.7M for the next two years while his actual cash payout each year is $9.1M (though $2M of that has likely already been paid in the form of a signing bonus for this year). Very few teams have that much cap space to absorb the contract outright. Waddell has indicated his preference would be to make more of a pure ‘hockey trade’ but that might be hard to come by at this point. To that end, the GM acknowledged that some retention might be required to ultimately push a move over the finish line: “We might end up eating some money. If I wanted to eat half, I could’ve traded him by now, but that’s not my first choice.” With rookie camps about six weeks away, executives will likely try to take some time away before getting ready for training camps. Based on the tepid interest thus far, there’s a good chance that’s already the case. As a result, while Laine is now free to speak to potentially interested teams, it looks as if it will take some time for a potential market to materialize.

Eagles former center Jason Kelce was a force for the team for over a decade. In his 13-year career, he played in 193 games, made seven Pro Bowls, was a six-time All-Pro and was an anchor for the team’s first-ever Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl LII. After the 2023 season, Kelce decided to hang up the cleats on an illustrious career. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s done contributing to the team. According to multiple reports, the Birds have offered Kelce a new, exciting opportunity. CBS Sports reported that if Kelce desired, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman would welcome him into a position in his front office. The report said that Roseman thinks Kelce would be good “at anything in football.” “He’d be a heck of an evaluator, I’ve tried to recruit him to come work for me, too, because he can evaluate players.” One of the most explicit examples of this is when he scouted his replacement, Cam Jurgens, whom the Eagles drafted in 2022. When we were in that draft, I gave him a few centers that we really liked, and he came out and said, ‘I love Cam Jurgens,’” Roseman said, according to Bleacher Report. Kelce has gone on record praising Jurgens and his ability at the position. Roseman isn’t the only one who would consider Kelce for a job. Bleacher Report said the head coach, Nick Sirianni, would consider Kelce for a position on his coaching staff. “Jason Kelce can have a space on anything he wants to do on this football team,” Sirianni said. “I love him. I’ll greatly miss him. I can’t say enough good things about how much he meant to me as a coach.” Perhaps this position could also be a fit for Kelce. The CBS Sports report noted that Kelce has been a regular at the team’s practice facility since retiring. Offensive tackle Lane Johnson said he could “most definitely” see Kelce working with the team in some way. On the coaching side, Kelce may have to decide quicker if he wants to secure a position on the staff. Sportsnaut noted that Sirianni is on the hot seat this season. Much blame for last year’s second-half collapse fell on Sirianni’s shoulders. If the Eagles fail to make at least a deep postseason run in 2024, that may be the end of Sirianni’s tenure with the team. If Sirianni were to depart and a more neutral head coach was brought in, Kelce might lose some favoritism regarding being given a head coaching job due to his history with the team. On the other hand, Roseman probably isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so a front office position would likely be open as long as Roseman is with the team. In the meantime, Kelce will remain a prominent member of NFL media. He will continue his “New Heights” podcast with brother Travis Kelce and join the Monday Night Countdown crew on ESPN this upcoming season.

The Los Angeles Rams appear to have gotten the steal of the 2023 NFL Draft in fifth-round wideout Puka Nacua, who set the new rookie single-season record for receptions (105) and receiving yards (1,486) last season. Nacua was a Pro Bowler, earned second team All-Pro honors and was the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year runner-up as well. Now, as they deal with injuries in their wide receiver room, the New Orleans Saints are turning to Puka’s older brother, Samson Nacua, to try and help provide some depth. Samson played four seasons at the University of Utah from 2017-2020, posting 82 receptions for 1,015 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns across 45 games. Samson then transferred to Brigham Young University at the same time that Puka moved from the University of Washington to BYU for the 2021 campaign. Samson, who is 26-years-old and has never played in an NFL game, was fifth on the Cougars that season in receptions (21) and receiving yards (329) and tied for second in touchdown catches (three). Puka led the squad in receiving yards (805) and was tied for the top spot in touchdown receptions (six), while adding 43 catches, which were second-most on the team. The elder Nacua most recently suited up for the Michigan Panthers in the United Football League, while another older brother of Puka’s, Kai, currently plays safety for the team. Kai played at BYU from 2013-16, went undrafted and played 25 NFL games across three separate seasons (2017, 2020, 2021) with the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets. Three New Orleans wide receivers — Bub Means, Cedrick Wilson and Equanimeous St. Brown — have all recently missed practices with injuries, and star wideout Chris Olave also exited a session early on Tuesday due to a hip issue.
