Andy Murray showed some major appreciation for Novak Djokovic shortly after his career officially came to an end as the Briton is rooting for his big rival to accomplish his goal of winning a gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
On Thursday evening, former world No. 1 Murray’s career finished after he and Dan Evans suffered a 2-6 4-6 loss to USA’s Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul in the men’s doubles quarterfinal.

While Murray saw his career come to an end, Djokovic reached his third Olympic semifinal after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 7-6 (3).
For Djokovic – who owns the all-time Slam record and also the record for the most weeks spent at the world No. 1 spot – winning an Olympic gold medal is the biggest goal for the last part of his career since it is basically the only thing missing in his astonishing collection.
“It clearly means a lot to him. When he plays for Serbia in Davis Cup, or the matches he played in the Olympic semi-finals, you can see that side coming out from him. It would be great if he could make it,” Murray said.
“My biggest matches were mostly against Djokovic. The finals in Australia, we played finals in all the Grand Slams, we played in the Olympics… Novak is someone I’ve known since I was 11 years old.”

But will Djokovic be able to play today his SF match against Lorenzo Musetti?
Djokovic may have won in two sets against Tsitsipas but he sustained a knee injury early in the second set and had to receive treatment and take some anti-inflammatory pills.
After the match, Djokovic admitted he was “very concerned” and noted he would have to do some tests before the Musetti semifinal.
Also, one of the things that made Djokovic worried was the fact that he was also able to beat Francisco Cerundolo at this year’s French Open, only to later learn that his knee injury was serious and that he needed to have surgery.
It remains to be seen if Djokovic will be able to play against Musetti later today, and if he plays, how will it all look.
