The hard-court summer is here – and action kicks off at the Canadian Open.
The women’s event takes place in Toronto this summer, with world No 6 Jessica Pegula looking to defend her title.
As the tournament gets underway, we look back at the last five women to lift the title.
2023: Jessica Pegula
Pegula comes in as the defending champion, having won one of the biggest titles of her career in Montreal 12 months ago.
The American eased past Yulia Putintseva and Jasmine Paolini to reach the last eight, where she battled past compatriot and doubles partner Coco Gauff to progress into the semi-finals.
There, she picked up one of the biggest victories of her career, downing world No 1 Iga Swiatek in three sets to reach the final.
And it was smooth sailing for her there, easing past a fatigued Liudmila Samsonova for the loss of just one game to lift the title.
2022: Simona Halep
Former world No 1 Halep picked up her third Canadian Open title in 2022 with a stirring run to the title in Toronto.

The Romanian did not drop a set on her way to the last eight, where she beat Gauff to reach the semi-final.
Halep then defeated Pegula from a set down to reach the final, where she fought past Beatriz Haddad Maia to claim her ninth WTA 1000 title.
That remains the most recent title of her career, having spent most of the last two years sidelined due to suspension or injury.

2021: Camila Giorgi
In one of the most surprising runs in Canadian Open history, the now-retired Giorgi defeated some huge names to claim the biggest victory of her career three years ago.
The Italian defeated ninth seed Elise Mertens in round one, before knocking out seventh seed Petra Kvitova in round three, and 15th seed Coco Gauff in the last eight.

Giorgi then edged past Pegula in three sets to reach the final, where she upset fourth seed and former world No 1 Karolina Pliskova to claim a shock victory.
2019: Bianca Andreescu
Canadian star Andreescu became the first home champion to lift the title in 50 years thanks to her epic run in 2019.
Andreescu beat compatriot Eugenie Bouchard in round one and would go on to beat fifth seed Kiki Bertens on her way to the last eight.
There, she squeezed past third seed Pliskova in three sets, before fending off future Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin to reach the final.
A blockbuster against Serena Williams was set, but Andreescu claimed the title after her opponent retired injured just four games in.
2018: Simona Halep
Ranked No 1 at the time, Halep claimed the second of her Canadian Open titles back in 2018.
The two-time major winner battled past Anastasia Pavyluchenkova in round one, before storming past Venus Williams and Caroline Garcia to reach the last four.

The Romanian then breezed past future No 1 Ashleigh Barty in their semi-final contest, before fending off third seed Sloane Stephens in a three-set thriller.
