TennisNaomi Osaka: The marketing queen
That historic day in which Serena Williams lost the U.S. Open against Naomi Osaka in 2018 is an evening no tennis fan will ever forget. It was sort of a “passing the torch” moment for both players. Those who don’t remember how that went down, let us refresh your memory. As probably the biggest female tennis player in history, Serena Williams is obviously not ready to lose at any time. But what probably hurt her the most was the general reaction from fans who publicly acknowledged they didn’t want her to win. During the game itself, people started jeering at her for no reason. She took a long break after that, had a baby and is now back on the tennis court.

Naomi Osaka opens up about social media abuse
OIn August 6, Naomi Osaka was at the Tennis Insider Club podcast talking about the aftermath of that moment. It was a truly challenging moment for her that she will never forget. Especially with the fans against her so strongly. She revealed that going on social media to see reactions from her victory was a painful experience that made her cry for hours. This is what she said on that podcast: “I went on social media…I was just reading a lot of people saying that I didn’t deserve to win. After I won my first US Open. Oh God!, I remember I started crying a lot. I still think about it a lot.”
We can all remember what that was like for Naomi, she was ostracized for her reaction to negative comments from the people and the press as well. Today, Osaka did participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics but she suffered an early elimination that made her return home quickly. She is on her road to recover the same verion of herself that competed against the best female tennis star in history. In fact, Naomi recently revealed she is trying to take some pointers from Polish star Iga Swiatek and improve her own game from that. Hopefully, that tactic works and we can get the best out of Naomi Osaka yet.
