The Paris Olympics gave fans a lot of emotions and surprises. One of the most exciting events of this edition of the Games was certainly the retirement of Andy Murray, who left tennis after a very long and successful career.

Despite his huge love of tennis, Andy has realized that his body is no longer able to support the efforts required by professional sport. The former Scottish champion had hoped to play the singles at the Wimbledon Championships and the Paris Olympics, but a back injury forced him to make a different decision.

The three-time Grand Slam champion underwent a delicate back surgery just before the Wimbledon Championships, in which he played only doubles with his brother Jamie. Murray also had a great time at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he joined forces with Dan Evans.

Murray is a legend

The last five years have been really complicated for the former world number 1, who has continued to work hard even though he knew he would never return to the levels of the past. The Scotsman has become an example of resilience and self-sacrifice for young ATP tour talents and has found a way to bring his amazing career to a dignified ending. Andy Murray has been loved both on and off the tennis court. The 3-time Grand Slam champion has never given up despite the difficulties and has always shown his huge passion for tennis.

Speaking with Eurosport, former WTA star Laura Robson commented on Murray’s last experience at the Olympics: “His one for this week was a guy… there’s one athlete from Liechtenstein and he was searching the village, high and low, to try and find this poor man. He tracked him down, he’s got it, and it was like he had won the Olympic gold. Honestly, he came in and was showing everyone, “Look what I’ve got! It’s a bit unfair in a way because it is a competition and because he’s Andy Murray, everyone wants to give him a pin. He’s got an unfair [advantage], it’s a little unfair!”

Recently, Dave Haggerty – President of the ITF – paid tribute to Andy: “Sir Andy Murray has lived and breathed the values of tennis throughout his long career, championing equality and helping to send the message that our sport is for everyone. We will of course remember his two Olympic Golds; his Grand Slam wins and his never-say-die attitude on the court. We will also remember his Davis Cup victory with Great Britain in 2015, helping his team to the title for the first time since 1936. While this wonderful chapter of his career is now drawing to a close, we know that Sir Andy’s love of tennis will see him continue to be involved in helping to grow and develop our sport globally.”

The former world number 1 has beaten the Big 3 several times and has taken away many satisfactions, such as the 3 Grand Slam titles and two gold medals at the Olympics (in London 2012 and Rio 2016). Injuries have kept Murray from staying at the top for longer, but the Scotsman must not have any regrets.

24-time Grand Slam champion and former World No.1 Novak Djokovic also praised Murray: “The first time I met Andy, I was 12. We go very long back. We were never too close on the tour because it’s difficult, you’re rivals. We always had tremendous respect for each other, shared the stage, so to say, for many, many years.

I think there is only maybe one week difference in age. Our trajectory to the professional tour and top of the men’s game is pretty similar. I mean, not much was separating our careers. We played some incredible matches all over the world, finals of different Grand Slams – all Grand Slams actually. I played him in finals of all Grand Slams, which I think maybe could be the only player I faced in the finals of all Grand Slams. Maybe Rafa. I’m not sure. He’s definitely one of the three guys, other than Roger and Rafa, that really has impacted my career and my growth as a tennis player a lot.”

The former world number 1 has always loved to play outside the tennis court and was considered one of the funniest players on the ATP tour. The former Scottish champion should stay in touch with tennis and help younger players to grow up healthy. The hope of the fans is to see him happy and serene in the coming years.
