Third seed Coco Gauff is set to square off against 27th seed Elina Svitolina in a highly anticipated third-round encounter at the US Open on Friday, August 30.
Coco Gauff kicked off her title defense in style against France’s Varvara Gracheva in the first round, dropping just 2 games en route to a 6-2, 6-0 thumping on Arthur Ashe Stadium.In the second round, Gauff faced German veteran Tatjana Maria. Both players traded breaks of serve to open the match. They frequently attacked the net and continually applied pressure on each other at the start of the set. A poor seventh game from Maria, however, gave Gauff the advantage. She managed to maintain the lead and served out the set, despite the German player adding pressure.
Gauff dominated the second set from the start and outplayed the veteran in every department. She broke serve thrice and sealed a dominating 6-4, 6-0 victory with a blistering cross-court backhand.Svitolina, on the contrary, opened her campaign with an impressive 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback victory against Argentina’s Maria Lourdes Carle, with the match lasting 2 hours and 20 minutes.Up against compatriot Anhelina Kalinina in the following round, Svitolina started much stronger, breaking serve twice to secure a comfortable first set. She continued her dominance in the second set, breaking serve in the very first game with a brilliant backhand overhead drop shot. She dominated proceeding from the back of the court, clinching an emphatic 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina’s third-round encounter promises to be a thrilling contest, given their strong performances in the previous round and their historically close matches.
Gauff was impressive on both returns and at the net in her previous round. She won 68% of points when going forward and converted five out of eight break-point opportunities.
