Here’s how the tennis champion and Wyn Beauty founder spends a day at the U.S. Open, off the court with friends and family

After stepping off the court two years ago—with six U.S. Open wins under her belt—tennis champion Serena Williams this week returned triumphantly to the New York–based tournament—but this time, as a fan. It’s safe to say Williams’s day at the open this year is drastically different from years prior, when she’d get to the stadium early for practice and perfect her five-minute makeup in the locker room after matches (the inspiration behind her brand Wyn Beauty). We caught up with the tennis legend to learn how Williams enjoys her return to Queens’s Arthur Ashe Stadium with friends, family, several lipsticks, and lots of popcorn.
7:30 a.m. The first thing I do, as sad as it is, is roll over and look at my phone, but I think everyone does that nowadays. Whenever I go to the U.S. Open, I stay at my favorite hotel in Manhattan. My kids are in the adjoining room. Olympia usually comes in, and I let her watch something on the iPad for a bit while I catch up on the news, and she takes advantage of my “me” time. Then, 15 minutes later, I actually get out of bed, and we brush our teeth together.
8:00 a.m. Next, I get into my skincare. I start by washing my face, then applying serum, and then sunscreen. Typically, my routine depends on the day and whether or not Olympia has school. If she has school, then I put on the Wyn Beauty Skin Tint, so I can have a fresh face for the whole day, and add a little mascara. I don’t want to look so glam like I’m going on a photo shoot, but I also don’t want to look like I just rolled out of bed. I don’t really do lipstick in the morning because it’s so early, so I will put on lip oil or gloss.

8:25 a.m. In my mind, my routine is five minutes. But in reality, it’s about 25 minutes. I run downstairs, and we have breakfast. I’m always a little late, because where does the time go in the morning? I love fresh green juice, and I always drink a lot of water in the morning.
9:00 a.m. Since I’m not playing, I like to have fun with it but still be in a uniform. I always wear skirts because they give me a little pizzazz. I repurpose an old denim skirt I wore during an old match and love it.

11:00 a.m. The U.S. Open suite opens at 11:30 am, and I’m very punctual—with anything tennis-related! I even arrive a little early. I am familiar with the stadium because I always find time to visit my family in the stands. I have a lot of memories of being in the stadium and suites, and I’m so excited for my family and friends to join me this time! One of my very supportive sisters, Isha, will join us. We’ll even have the Wyn Beauty team in the suite. When I was playing, I’d listen to podcasts—or even silence—before a match. I don’t really take time for myself—it’s a weakness of mine—but silence before matches was like that for me. This year, since I’m not playing, I’ll listen to Tyla; she’s cute and fun.

1:00 p.m. I’m most looking forward to the U.S. Open stadium popcorn. I love it!
2:00 p.m. In between sets, I touch up my makeup. I wish I had my products back when I was playing, because I’d always touch up before matches, refilling my brows or adding hairspray so my hair didn’t move. In the suite, I was giving my friends and family little touch-ups with my new Wyn Beauty lip liners and glosses.

7:00 p.m. I leave the stadium and have a nice dinner with friends and family.
8:00 p.m. I put the kids to bed and then get into my nighttime routine. I go to bed a lot earlier now, with the kids.
10:00 p.m. I love to take a super-hot shower right before I go to bed and wash my face to remove any product that I still have on from the day. Then, I usually get in bed and watch a program. I’ve been bingeing The Umbrella Academy. The last thing I do before bed is drink water. I drink a lot of water these days.
