“I have to say sorry” – Carlos Alcaraz hilariously revisits his ‘memorable’ match point save vs Alex de Minaur in response to Aussie’s cheeky question
Carlos Alcaraz hilariously apologized to Alex de Minaur for a “memorable” match point save. The Spaniard’s apology came while recalling a stunning passing shot to save a match point during their 2022 Barcelona Open semifinal.
In the second set, with Alcaraz down 15-40 and facing match point at 5-6, he pulled off a sensational forehand passing shot, saving the match. The Spaniard went on to win the fixture 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 6-4.That victory secured an all-Spanish final for Alcaraz, where he triumphed over Pablo Carreno Busta to capture his fourth career ATP title. In a light-hearted moment during an ATP video segment, De Minaur asked Alcaraz about his most memorable match point save, only to be reminded of their dramatic encounter.
“Without a doubt, against you in Barcelona, 15-40, 6-5, second set. I can’t still believe that I made that shot. So I have to say sorry about it, but yeah, it was that point, that one,” Alcaraz recalled with a grin.
This thrilling Barcelona showdown was the first time Carlos Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur met on the ATP Tour. The pair last squared off in the final of the 2023 cinch Championships at Queen’s Club in London, where Alcaraz won in straight sets.
