‘We Had a Special Bond’—Serena Williams’ Ex-Coach Patrick Mouratoglou Reflects on Unique Tennis ‘Chemistry’ With the American Legend

Did Serena Williams’ success owe more to her talent or Patrick Mouratoglou’s coaching genius?

Serena Williams has etched her name in tennis history as a legend, with a record-breaking 23 Grand Slam titles. However, she didn’t achieve it all alone. She had the support of her family and her team, which included the famous French Coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. The journey started back in 2012 after a slam-less year in 2011 for Serena, to stir things back again. And it did happen. The duo went on to win the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open during their inaugural year, thus marking a successful start to what turned out to be a decade-long partnership. But what laid the foundation of this strong collaboration that left everyone wanting for more?

Despite bidding adieu to professional tennis, Serena’s name still stands tall in the circuit. Fans are not looking for the next big tennis player, rather they are looking for the next Serena Williams. But when Mouratoglou started coaching Serena, she just had 13 Grand Slams in her collection. And from 2012 to 2017, she added another 10, taking her numbers to a record high of 23. This success was possible because of the special bond between the coach and his protégé.

Mouratoglou has trained many big names over the years, but “no collaboration has proven more enduring than that with Serena Williams.” Hence, everyone wants to know the secret of their chemistry. The celebrated French coach opened up about his special bond with Serena and revealed that the two of them got along straightaway. “We had a special bond with Serena from the start,” said Mouratoglou, highlighting the impeccable trust between the two.

He further added, “As a coach, my job is to find chemistry with my players because, to be successful, they need to trust you completely. I always work to build that connection.” Serena’s chemistry with Mouratoglou was indeed next level.

Mouratoglou further remarked, “With Serena, it was on another level. You can’t always decide that; it’s just how it is with some people. Our mutual trust and connection were strong, and together, we achieved incredible things, like multiple Grand Slams.” The duo could have added 4 more Grand Slams to the tally of 23, from 2018 to 2022, but Serena failed to convert those opportunities in the finals at the Wimbledon and US Open.

Naomi Osaka has announced her split with coach Wim Fissette after what can be called a sub-par year. The four-time Grand Slam champion failed to make it past the initial rounds of the Grand Slams and other tournaments this season. She raised hopes for her fans after her terrific performance at the Roland Garros against Iga Swiatek. However, she failed to produce her best results in the tournaments that followed. But now, it seems that Osaka is trying to get her rhythm back, even if it means making changes to her coaching staff.

Thanking her former coach Fissette, Osaka posted an Instagram story that read, “Four years, two Slams and a whole lot of memories. Thanks Wim, for being a great coach and even better person, wishing you all the best.” However, what shocked the tennis fans more than the split was the fact that Osaka was seen practicing with Serena Williams’ ex-coach Mouratoglou, who was associated with Holger Rune until recently.

It’s a surprising yet exciting development on Naomi Osaka’s front. Can Patrick Mouratoglou have the same sort of stint with the Japanese star in years to come, as he had with Serena? Only time will tell.
