Serena Williams to produce biopic on fashion designer Ann Lowe
The work of American couturier and fashion designer Ann Lowe will be the subject of an upcoming film titled The Dress. Legendary tennis player Serena Williams will produce the film through her banner Nine Two Six Productions, with Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth Carter serving as an executive producer. Carter, who bagged an Oscar each for Black Panther and its sequel Wakanda Forever, will also serve as the costume designer for the film. TriStar Pictures bought the pitch script for the biopic, based on Piper Huguley’s book titled By Her Own Design. Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue, the duo known for A Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood, will write the script.
Ann Lowe, who passed away in 1981, is among the most prolific yet least-recognised couturiers in the US. She designed wardrobes with mid-century styles for some of the most prominent personalities in the US, including the Rockefeller, Du Pont, Whitney, and Roosevelt families.
The Dress will explore how Lowe, the first African-American woman who owned a Madison Avenue-based store, got commissioned to design Jackie Bouvier’s dress for her wedding to John F Kennedy.
