Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, has voiced his support for restricting smartphones in classrooms and advocates the use of “dumb phones” for communication with parents. Ohanian and Serena Williams married in 2017, and have two children: Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., who is seven, and Adira River Ohanian, born in August 2023.

Amid reports of growing concerns about children’s mental health and academic performance, some high schools in the United States are looking to implement stricter measures on students bringing smartphones to school. On Tuesday, Alexis Ohanian posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) voicing his support on the matter. He spoke about the distracting nature of smartphones and suggested that parents could opt for “dumb phones,” which have basic features, allowing parents to contact their children in case of an emergency.

“There’s been a lot of talk around schools limiting or completely removing access to smartphones during school hours and you know what, I support it. Kids today have access to amazing smartphones with tons of very distracting and potentially problematic apps. I understand parents especially here in the United States wanting to be able to talk to their children at school in the event of an emergency, God forbid. Maybe the policy that’s better here is just “dumb phone”. One of these basic simple feature phones,” Alexis Ohanian said.

He went on to say that while his daughter Olympia is too young right now, he would welcome the idea of using “dumb phones” when she gets older and starts attending high school.

“I think we’re gonna see some really well-made feature phones coming out here soon, plenty of parents like myself would much rather give those to our kids than a smartphone. I’ve got a seven-year-old, my oldest so it’s not happening anytime soon but when the time comes, feature phone all the way. I love the idea of restricting smartphones keeping them out of the classroom, let’s see the comeback of dumb phones,” he added.

In an interview with Glamour on 30 September, Serena Williams said that she doesn’t mind if her daughters don’t pursue a tennis career, but hoped that they develop a close relationship with God. She explained that her own relationship with God helped keep her grounded, especially after gaining fame and wealth at an early age.

“Whatever you want to do, give it your all. It even says that in the Bible. ‘Whatever you do, do it wholeheartedly.’ It’s the one thing that was able to keep me grounded. Especially with getting famous and wealthy so early, that stuff can really change who you are as a person, and I didn’t want to change. We’re so small,” Serena Williams said.

“I pray every night that the girls stay close and have a true relationship with God on their own and get to know Him, It’s the most important thing that I personally think you can do,” she added.

In an interview with PEOPLE magazine in 2018, Serena Williams said that she was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, and revealed that they didn’t plan a party for Olympia, who turned one year old in 2018.
