The top 10 ATP player Andy Murray was advised to coach before joining Novak Djokovic’s team

Before teaming up with Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray was told to help out with another star of the ATP Tour.

The news that Andy Murray will coach Novak Djokovic through the off-season and at the 2025 Australian Open is still sinking in.

Murray, 37, retired earlier this year after a remarkable career that included three Grand Slam titles and two Olympic gold medals.

Despite stepping away from the tour only in August, Murray is clearly eager to remain involved in the game, as evidenced by the surprise announcement that he will join forces with Djokovic in 2025.

Reflecting on the new collaboration, Murray shared his excitement, saying, “I’m looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change.”

Seven-time champion Mats Wilander had in fact claimed earlier this month that Murray could become one of the greatest tennis coaches of all time, should the Scot decide to remain in the sport following retirement.

Andy Roddick suggested other WTA and ATP players had approached Murray as a coach – a view echoed by his co-host Jon Wertheim.

However, it wasn’t immediately clear which players they were referring to, with no names included.

Wilander, in keeping with the sentiment that Murray had solid caching prospects, observed that Casper Ruud is at a crossroads in his career, questioning whether he still believes he belongs among the top players in the world.

Wilander suggested that Ruud might benefit from a change. Similar to what Murray did by hiring Ivan Lendl after losing four Grand Slam finals, Ruud might seek to recreate the change which ultimately helped Murray win three majors and two Olympic golds.

He implied that Ruud could follow a similar path to rejuvenate his career and regain his confidence.

Later, Wilander even went as far to suggest that Murray and Ruud might get together and try and achieve a maiden major for the Norwegian.

“I just threw out a name there that I think would be more suited for this than any other player, which is Andy Murray,” he told Eurosport earlier this month. Sir Andy Murray, would you do us a favour, please, and not walk away from professional tennis when you’re not playing anymore?

“Andy, as a coach, might become the greatest coach of all time because he knows the game. He’s into stats. He physically works harder than anyone I’ve ever seen. He’s overcome these obstacles of not winning Grand Slams in his first couple of four or five Grand Slam final appearances. So yes, my call goes to Andy.”

This is just the start of Andy Murray’s coaching career

Murray’s coaching journey is just beginning, and there’s plenty of room for growth in his new role. While his partnership with Djokovic is grabbing headlines, it’s not necessarily a long-term commitment, given the Serb’s age and evolving career.

There are several promising avenues for Murray to explore as a coach, such as working with fellow Brits like Jack Draper or Emma Raducanu, both of whom could benefit from his wealth of experience.

Additionally, should Holger Rune remain without a major title, Murray might find an intriguing challenge in mentoring the Danish star as he looks to reach the next level of his career.

With Murray’s expertise and tactical insight only going to develop, these potential collaborations could lead to more exciting developments in tennis.
