Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic share hilarious exchange on Instagram ahead of their coaching partnership starting

The banter between Novak Djokovic and his coach Andy Murray has already begun.

It has been one week since the announcement regarding a significant change to the Serbian’s team.

Djokovic hired Murray to join his coaching team until at least the conclusion of the 2025 Australian Open in January.

This is a move nobody saw coming, especially given Murray’s retirement from tennis took place just three months ago at the Paris Olympics.

Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have known each other since they were children and grew up to become fierce rivals on the ATP Tour.

Now they are into a player and coach phase of their relationship which for many was completely unexpected.

Murray is already embracing his role as coach after Djokovic was pictured at the Lusail International Circuit watching the practice sessions for the F1 Qatar Grand Prix.

The Brit took to Instagram and left a comment under a photo of Djokovic with Mercedes driver George Russell which read: “He should be on the practice court,” along with the shocked and straight-faced emojis.

Djokovic saw the funny side and responded alongside laughing emojis: “Sorry coach I will be back soon.” This offseason will be an interesting one for Djokovic when he gets to work with a member of the tennis world who knows him more than most.

What did Novak Djokovic say about hiring Andy Murray as his coach?

For anyone that is still struggling to fathom that Murray will be coaching Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion shared the conversations that took place to make it a reality.

While in Qatar he 37-year-old spoke to Sky Sports F1 about the shock decision, which took him by surprise as well as the fans.

“So I took six months to really think about if I need a coach and if yes, who that is going to be, and the profile of the coach,” said Djokovic, who was at the Qatar GP after being unveiled as the new Global Brand Ambassador for Qatar Airways.

“We were going through different names and I realised that the perfect coach for me at this point would be someone who has been through the experiences I am going through. Possibly a multiple Grand Slam winner, a former number one.

“I was thinking about different people and then the Andy Murray discussion appeared on the table with me and my team. I was like I am going to give him a call and see how it goes. It caught him a bit off guard as well because he wasn’t expecting it.

“We connected really fast and he accepted after a few days. I couldn’t be more excited about it. This collaboration is a surprise to me as well, to everyone, but it’s exciting for tennis.

“He has been one of my greatest rivals, the same age, we have played in all the biggest stadiums in our sport so I can’t wait to get out on the court and prepare for next season.”
