Rafael Nadal , a 22-time Grand Slam champion, signed a deal with the Saudi Tennis Federation at the beginning of 2024, becoming its ambassador. It was for this reason that the Spaniard recently participated in the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah.

Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in sports, hosting the Spanish, Italian and Argentine Super Cups and attracting football stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo. The country is also involved in golf, the Dakar Rally, Formula One and boxing, and will host the FIFA World Cup in 2034.

In tennis, Saudi Arabia has gained prominence by hosting the WTA and Next Gen ATP Finals, as well as planning future Masters 1000 events. This year saw the historic Six Kings Slam with the largest prize pool in tennis history, in which Nadal participated.

Many see Saudi Arabia’s sports investments as “sportwashing,” or using sports to improve reputations. A report by Human Rights Watch indicates that a Saudi investment fund supports and benefits from human rights abuses.

Nadal addressed the criticism in an interview with The National. “I accept criticism and I especially respect critics who do it by respecting other people. If not, that’s a different story. I know the decision will cause some criticism, but I don’t care if I’m achieving my goals. I want to improve life and promote sport in this country,” he said.

Nadal plans to continue his role as a sports promoter in Saudi Arabia. Other players, such as Matteo Berrettini and Ons Jabeur, have also signed deals with the Saudi Federation. The Spaniard is even considering opening a new branch of the Rafa Nadal Academy in Diriyah.
