Camila Giorgi has appeared on TV after being accused of fleeing the country following her abrupt retirement from tennis.
The former world No. 26 ended her career suddenly in May. The WTA was said to have been unable to contact her or her family to address her retirement.
It was then reported that Giorgi fled Italy for the United States as authorities in her homeland looked to question her over gaps in her tax returns.

Giorgi and her father Sergio were also accused of stealing valuable furniture from a villa in Italy and leaving without paying six months of rent. The 32-year-old has now appeared on Italian TV programme Verissimo, denying all accusations of tax fraud and theft.
“The problems with the tax authorities? My family did not know about them, they were created by outside people who managed me and did this as a job,” she said.
“My father did not earn a living doing this, he was just my trainer. We were never afraid, we changed the people who managed us and now we are in order.

“I did not expect this. Many misconceptions have been created. They always put my father’s name in the middle, it is not always his fault – he has no business being here.”

The 2021 Canadian Open champion also shut down suggestions that she “fled” her home country. She continued: “We did not flee for tax reasons.
“I never fled, I never spoke. We did not pay the rent and we took the furniture? The house had no furniture, we brought it ourselves.”
Giorgi explained that she and her family had long lived between Italy and the USA. “I am in Miami, while my parents are in California,” she added.
The Italian tennis star’s decision to end her career came to light when she appeared on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s list of retirement players. The body oversees anti-doping testing protocols which are necessary to play professional tennis.

Giorgi finally confirmed the news a few days later in an Instagram statement. She wrote: “Please trust this Instagram for truthful information.
“To my lovely fans, I am happy to formally announce retirement from my tennis career. I am so grateful for your wonderful love and support for so many years.”
During her appearance on Verissimo, the 32-year-old said she had been planning to announce her retirement during the French Open but was forced to address the news when her name was spotted on the ITIA’s list.
