Tuesday was a big day for Andy Murray . The 37-year-old from Dunblane played the 1000th match in his career on the main tour. In the first round of the ATP 500 tournament in London, he faced Alexei Popyrin . The experienced and titled Briton celebrated his anniversary match with a victory – he defeated the Australian qualifier 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
“I didn’t realize I was going to play the 1,000th match of my career. It wasn’t until my mother told me before I went out on court. The match itself was tough, but at the end I got a great reward for all the work and effort I put in,” said Murray, who had nine aces, 27 finishers and two break points in an hour and 51 minutes of play.
Murray, a five-time Cinch Championships winner who is playing in this year’s edition thanks to a wild card, will face Jordan Thompson in the second round . He lost to the Australian on the courts of the Queen’s Club seven years ago.
The local fans had other reasons to celebrate on Tuesday. Jack Draper , the new number one in British tennis, gave away five games to Mariano Navone and became the second-round opponent of the top-seeded and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz . Billy Harris also used his wild card , beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry and will now face another surprise case, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard . The French qualifier proved better than Ben Shelton , the tournament’s “six”.
Daniel Evans, however, unfortunately did not use the chance from the organizers . The Briton had an unlucky fall at the beginning of the third set of the duel with Brandon Nakashima and was unable to continue playing. As a result, Nakashima will face Lorenzo Musetti for promotion to the quarterfinals.
