Serena Williams all smiles as she poses with “icon” Oprah Winfrey at artist Titus Kaphar’s movie premiere
Serena Williams attended the movie premier of artist Titus Kaphar in Los Angeles on Thursday, September 12. She was joined by other celebrities including American television icon Oprah Winfrey at the event.
Kaphar is an African-American contemporary painter known for recreating art history to include people of color in his works. His movie ‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ is his debut as a filmmaker.The 23-time Grand Slam champion took to Instagram to share a picture of herself with the artist and Oprah Winfrey. Williams also penned a note in which she shared that she was a patron and praised the artist.
“Titus Kaphar is a huge part of that journey. This exhibit “Exhibiting Forgiveness” is so emotional and his story through his film is one that so many of us can relate to,” the 42-year-old said.
“What a joy to see so many icons like @oprah, @ava, @therealruthecarter, @andradaymusic, @flea333, @johnearljelks show up and support. Congratulations Titus! “Whereas if you do not forgive men for their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses,” she added.

Two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth Carter was also present at the event. Other celebrities present included Emmy award-winner Ava DuVernay, Grammy award-winner Andra Day and actor John Earl Jelks.

Serena Williams is an ardent art and design lover. The William sisters have been attending the annual Miami Art Basel for the past couple of years. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion is a supporter of Pace Gallery and has also partnered with the artist Adam Pendleton.
In the same post as above, Williams shared her passion for African-American art and mentioned the museums that she has had opportunities to visit.
“Art is one of my many passions. I love collecting art in all forms and from all artists. In the past several years, I have made a commitment to be an avid collector of African American art. I love traveling and having the opportunity to go to museums like the Louvre, the Musée d’Orasay, the Prado, the Vatican, Uffizi, Guggenheim, & Metropolitan just to name a few,” the 42-year-old wrote on Instagram.
Serena Williams also wrote about the importance of including African American figures as part of her daughters’ art viewing experience.
“I love taking my daughtes there and letting them learn about what we know as fine art. However, I have to scour to see a face like mine in such amazing and iconic classic paintings. For me in our home, it’s important for my girls to see faces on our walls that look like them,” she added.
Last year, Williams had also shared pictures from her time taking daughter Olympia to an art event.The 42-year-old retired from tennis in 2022, with her best performance coming at that year’s US Open, which was her last tournament. She beat Danka Kovinic and then-World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit to reach the third round. Here, Williams lost to eventual quarterfinalist Ajla Tomljanovic in three sets.
