Carlos Alcaraz’s impeccable performance at the 2024 Wimbledon tournament hit a minor snag during his post-victory celebrations, involving an unexpected and slightly awkward moment with Pippa Middleton.
After a commanding straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s final, Alcaraz was honored in a ceremony attended by Princess of Wales Kate Middleton, her 9-year-old daughter Princess Charlotte, and Kate’s sister, Pippa Middleton.
The Princess of Wales warmly greeted Alcaraz, saying, “We’ve watched a lot on telly. It’s great to finally get to meet you.” Alcaraz then engaged in a brief conversation with Kate and Charlotte.
However, as the interaction concluded, Alcaraz appeared to unintentionally overlook Pippa, who was standing nearby, seemingly waiting for an introduction. Despite Kate’s apparent efforts to facilitate the meeting, Alcaraz departed from the venue without acknowledging the 40-year-old, creating a moment of palpable awkwardness.
Alcaraz is now part of tennis royalty
The trio of royals was present at Centre Court on Sunday to witness the men’s singles final, where Kate Middleton, 42, received a standing ovation amidst her ongoing battle with cancer, which she announced in March.
Alcaraz’s triumph marked his second Grand Slam win of the year, following his French Open victory in May, and his second consecutive Wimbledon title. “For me, this is the most beautiful tournament, the most beautiful court, and, obviously, the most beautiful trophy,” the 21-year-old phenom said after his win.
Joining the elite ranks of seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic, Alcaraz also becomes part of an even more illustrious group: he now stands alongside Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray as the only competitors to have claimed the Wimbledon trophy since 2010.
The Spanish tennis player is unbeatable
Before defeating Djokovic, Alcaraz bested Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals in four sets and overcame challenges from American Tommy Paul, Frenchman Ugo Humbert, and American Francis Tiafoe. His victory over Tiafoe was particularly dramatic, with Alcaraz overcoming a two-sets-to-one deficit and winning a fourth-set tiebreak.
Alcaraz’s straight-sets win against Djokovic marked just the second men’s Wimbledon singles final in over a decade where one player claimed all the sets, showcasing his dominance on the court.
Looking ahead, Alcaraz’s quest for a third straight Grand Slam victory continues in August at the U.S. Open in Queens’ Arthur Ashe Stadium. The young Spaniard aims to emulate Djokovic by winning three of the four Grand Slam events in a calendar year, further cementing his status as one of tennis’s brightest stars.
