Rafael Nadal is set to retire from tennis after this year’s Davis Cup Finals in Malaga.

Nadal enjoyed a legendary career on the ATP Tour, winning 22 Grand Slam titles, spending an astonishing 209 weeks as world number one in the process.

The Spaniard holds a number of records in tennis, perhaps most notably his 14 French Open titles, which many believe will never be broken.

At 38-years-old, Nadal’s body had started to struggle in recent years as he had to fight a number of serious injuries.

Nadal announced his retirement from tennis last month, stating that the Davis Cup finals will be his last tournament of his career.

His ‘farewell’ tour had already been in full swing, with Nadal playing alongside Carlos Alcaraz at the Paris Olympics, a true passing of the torch moment.

Alcaraz, Nadal’s compatriot, cherished the experience but wishes that he could’ve done something to stop him from retiring.

Carlos Alcaraz wishes he could’ve tried to convince Rafael Nadal not to retire

Speaking ahead of the ATP Finals in Turin, Alcaraz was asked by Marca if he has tried to convince Nadal to carry on playing in 2025.

“No, not really. I wish I could have,” he said.

“I know that the decision had already been made.

“If someone had told me that I had a chance of convincing him to continue, I would have done it and I would have tried because I don’t want to see him off the track yet.”

The 21-year-old went on to say that he understood Nadal had thought through the decision with his family.

“I asked him if it was a tough day when he announced his retirement, if it was a tough decision to make,” said Alcaraz.

“He said yes, but it is a decision that has been carefully thought out because these decisions are not made lightly.

“It was thought out with his family, with his team, it is his feeling.”

Rafael Nadal’s Davis Cup ‘last dance’

Nadal’s Spain have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup, which will take place in Malaga.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion has won the Davis Cup four times in his career so far, but will be hoping to take home the title one last time as he draws the curtain on a truly legendary career.

Spain last won the Davis Cup in 2019, when Nadal had an almost perfect week en route to the title.

Questions have been asked over the role Nadal is set to play at the Davis Cup, as with his fitness struggles it may well be more beneficial to use the 38-year-old in the doubles rather than the singles where has excelled for so long.

Alcaraz will be the star man in Malaga, and has made his thoughts clear on the Finals.

“I want to go without any emotional expectations,” he said.

“We want to win the title for Spain and also for Rafa, so that his last tournament is as God intended.”

Whether the fairy tale ending is in Spain and Nadal’s future remains to be seen, but the story has definitely made this year’s tournament one of the most anticipated in recent memory.

The Davis Cup Finals are set to take place from the 19-24 November.
