Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina wore a black ribbon at Wimbledon to commemorate the victims of Russia’s attack on a children’s hospital.

It was an emotional fourth round victory for the 29-year-old after hearing that 33 people had lost their lives across the country following the Russian strikes.

 

The children’s hospital in Kyiv was seriously damaged in the attack leading at least 19 people to be killed in the rare daytime attack, including two who died at the Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital – the biggest paediatric centre in the country.

Fighting back tears, Svitolina said: “It was a good performance from my side today. It’s a very difficult day today for Ukrainian people.

 

“It was not easy to focus today on the match. Since the morning it’s very difficult to read the news. just to go on the court is extremely is tough. I’m happy I could play today and get a win.”

 

At least 10 people were also killed in the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, along with three more killed in the eastern town of Pokrovsk and one in Dnipro, according to the head of the military administration in the city of Kryvyi Rih.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has pledged to fight back in the wake of the strikes.

 

He is currently visiting Poland where they have signed a security pact.

 

Mr Zelensky said: “Different cities: Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk. More than 40 missiles of various types. Residential buildings, infrastructure and a children’s hospital were damaged.”
