Lewis Hamilton’s post-race radio immediately after crossing line at Belgian Grand Prix has got people talking.

The final race of the F1 season before the summer break took place on Sunday afternoon at the legendary Spa-Francochamps circuit.

Russell ended up beating team-mate Hamilton, who was on much fresher tyres, by making a one-stop strategy pay dividends, having called for it over team radio.

However, Russell was soon under investigation and was later disqualified after his car was found to be underweight in post-race checks.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri completed the podium by finishing third, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in fourth.

Three-time world champion and current drivers’ championship leader Max Verstappen finished fifth, just ahead of rival Lando Norris in his McLaren.

Carlos Sainz was seventh for Ferrari, ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, as Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Alpine’s Esteban Ocon rounded off the points scoring positions in ninth and tenth respectively.

The F1 season will now go on its summer break, which includes a mandatory shutdown at the factories for two weeks, before the second half of the campaign takes place with the Dutch Grand Prix over the penultimate weekend in August.

The victory for Russell was his second of the season and indeed the third out of the last four races for Mercedes after the Silver Arrows have found recent form.

Russell was jubilant over team radio after seeing the chequered flag, but this was in stark contrast to Hamilton.

The seven-time world champion, in comparison, was completely silent as he made his way down the pitlane in his car to parc ferme, having been unable to get past his team-mate despite being on much younger tyres.

Russell was on a different strategy to Hamilton, who when speaking after the race in the media pen to broadcasters was clearly slightly irked by the strategy decisions Mercedes made, given the seven-time world champion had made it clear his tyres were in good condition before being pitted.

He said: “You have to put the faith in the people you work with. I put my faith in my strategists, I should be able to lean on them fully.

“I told them that the tyres were fine and they pulled me in. Did I know I was at risk of getting one stopped by my teammate? They didn’t tell me that.

“But congrats to George – it’s great to go into the break with such performance and now we can all feel a bit lighter and hopefully come back stronger in the second half of the season.”
