On December 21 Tyson Fury must do something he hasn’t yet in his boxing career – come back from a loss.

‘The Gypsy King’ was defeated by Oleksandr Usyk in May, losing out on becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis.

Fury was by no means outclassed by the elite Ukrainian, in fact he looked in control of the fight during the middle rounds with a powerful uppercut taking its toll. Was he the first man to crack the code? No, Usyk upped the gears like only he can do, bloodying the nose of the Brit in the eighth before putting a beating on him in round nine that saw the referee give Fury a standing count.

It was a split decision win and the rematch clause was quickly activated by Fury. Today he sent a message to his foe to ‘put him on notice.’

“Just finished a lovely little run in the Bay with the lads. Working away, chipping away nicely. December 21st, Usyk you’re on notice. Come on!”

Usyk’s retort was typically friendly.

“Hey my friend, Greedy Belly. Continue training. I’m rest, brother. I know your hard work, it’s good. I appreciate it. Thank you so much, Greedy Belly. You my friend. You are my friend.”

The rematch will only be for the WBC, WBA and WBO belts as Usyk lost his undisputed status when vacating the IBF belt – an act he called his ‘gift’ to Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua.

26-year-old Dubois has been elevated to full champion and will defend that status against ‘AJ’ on September 21. Many fans are already intrigued to see if Joshua and Fury can win their respective bouts in order to set up an all-British heavyweight super fight. Dubois and Usyk, of course, have other plans.
