Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek followed in her father Tomasz’s footsteps on Monday, July 30, by becoming the second member of the Swiatek family to reach the last eight at the Olympics. Tomasz reached the rowing quarterfinals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
The Polish world No. 1 took on China’s Xiyu Wang in the third round, after dominating Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu and France’s Diane Parry in the opening two rounds. She shrugged off a slow start against the Chinese to eventually seal an emphatic 6-3, 6-4 win and a berth in her first Olympic Games quarterfinals. The win was not only Swiatek’s 50th of the season, but it also ensured that she joined the elite company of her father Tomasz as the only two members of their family to make it to the final eight at the Olympics.
“Swiatek family members who achieved a top 8 finish at the Olympics: Tomasz Swiatek (rowing, Seoul 1988) Iga Swiatek (tennis, Paris 2024),” Bastien Fachan, X (formerly Twitter).

Tomasz was a rower back in his day and represented Poland in international competitions. He took part in the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the men’s quadruple sculls but fell short in his quest for a medal with a seventh-place finish. The Olympics have always been a top priority for the Pole and the fact that her father didn’t get across the line only adds more motivation for her to see her dad’s dream of winning an Olympic medal come true.

Top seed Iga Swiatek will continue her quest for a maiden Olympic gold medal against America’s Danielle Collins in a blockbuster quarterfinal clash on Wednesday, July 31. They will open play on Court Suzanne-Lenglen at 3.30pm local time.
Collins enters the contest on the back of a hard-fought 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win against Columbia’s Camila Osorio in the third round. She saw off Caroline Wozniacki and Laura Siegemund in the opening two rounds.Swiatek leads Collins 6-1 in their head-to-head currently. The Pole dominated in their previous encounter at the BNP Paribas Open earlier this year with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. All their encounters have been played on the hard courts so this will be their first meeting on the red dirt.Swiatek walks into the contest the favorite to go through given her ranking and superior clay court expertise. There is no discounting a surprise from Collins, however, who has been in the form in her life this season. She could give the Pole a real run for her money should she serve well, dictate points from the back of the court, and come to the net every once in a while.
