Dan Evans has revealed that his friends back home always cheekily text him asking about Sir Andy Murray – and how he’d never use the tennis ace’s official title when playing. Evans is now on his way back to the UK after he and Murray were knocked out of the Olympic men’s doubles tournament at the quarter-final stage against American pairing Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz.

This defeat at Roland Garros in Paris marked Murray’s final game before retiring, as the 37-year-old hangs up his racket after a stellar 19-year career. Evans has had nothing but praise for his doubles partner, as he joined Gabby Agbonlahor and Andy Goldstein on talkSPORT’s Drivetime show to discuss the team’s successes at the Olympics.
Goldstein was discussing the ‘Murray mania’ that had taken over the country as the pair performed at the Olympics, and cheekily asked Evans: “Do you have to call him Sir when you’re playing?”

Evans laughed and replied: “You know what, some of my mates always message and go ‘How’s Sir?’ I’ve never called him Sir, I don’t think I ever will.”
Murray was awarded a knighthood in 2019 after being crowned Wimbledon champion and securing Olympic gold for the second time in his career, while he was recovering from hip resurfacing surgery. While Murray does have an official ‘Sir’ title, Evans cleared up that he doesn’t address his team-mate in a more honourable way, and has enjoyed his time in the limelight with the Scottish star.
Evans also discussed how he was happy to play second fiddle to Murray’s fame at the Olympics, despite the pair being a doubles team at the tournament. Goldstein asked Evans: “Murray mania’s gone a bit nuts over here, everyone wants you and him to get gold. I mean it literally has taken over all of the back pages now. But I started the question by saying, Murray mania – even though you hit the winning shot yesterday, the back pages are Murray’s done it again. Do you mind that? Do you mind that you’re not the one they’re all talking about?”

Evans replied: “No, I’d be stupid to think they’re going to talk about me, he’s the Sir. He’s had an unbelievable career, so yeah – I’m more than happy to play the extra.”
Agbonlahor then interjected, praising Evans as he said: “You’re doing doubles though, you’re doing your fair share as well mate. It’s a team isn’t it, so you deserve your plaudits as well mate.”

The 34-year-old played down any notion of bad nature between himself and Murray, and insisted that the 37-year-old’s opinion was the only one that he was bothered about during their run at the Olympics. He said: “Yeah he knows that, he’s fully aware of that and that’s the only person that matters. We work as a team on the court you know, it’s not about who gets the plaudits.
“It’s about coming home with something for Team GB and you know, we’re old enough to know that we’re a team and that’s just the press for you.”
