Andy Murray’s career was officially over last night. The Scottish champion – who could not play singles at the Paris Olympics due to his physical condition – teamed up with Dan Evans and was beaten in doubles by the Americans Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz.
The three-time Grand Slam champion cried as he greeted the crowd, who gave him a thrilling tribute worthy of his amazing career. The former number 1 in the world was a great champion, who managed to win a lot and climb to the top of the ATP ranking despite the presence of legends such as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Murray’s style of play hasn’t made fans and experts go crazy, but his fighting spirit and his never-giving-up attitude have become an example for many young players. Andy’s body was no longer able to support the efforts required by professional sport and the Scotsman decided to retire after another injury.
Murray had a back operation just before the Wimbledon Championships, where he played doubles with his brother Jamie. The British legend should have also played mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu, but the US Open 2021 champion retired just before playing and sparked a lot of controversy. Andy Murray was appreciated by all his colleagues, especially because of his huge love for tennis. His career seemed to be over in 2019, before he underwent a delicate hip surgery.

Carlos Alcaraz pays tribute to Murray
Through his X profile, Spaniard ace Carlos Alcaraz wanted to dedicate a beautiful thought to Murray with whom he has an excellent relationship. “It was a privilege to share the court with you, Andy! Congratulations on a legendary career and for being an example to all. You will always have a fan here!” – Carlitos wrote.
Despite having worked hard in the last few years, Andy has not managed to return to the levels of the past and had to settle for a second-tier role. The former world number 1 has enjoyed this experience and is ready to start a new life. “It felt good,” Murray explained after his last match. “I knew that moment was coming for the last few months. If it didn’t happen today, that was going to be in a couple of days’ time and I was ready for it. Obviously I was emotional because it’s the last time I will play a competitive match. But I am genuinely happy just now. I’m happy with how it’s finished.
I’m glad that I got to go out here at the Olympics and finish on my terms, because at times in the last few years, that wasn’t a certainty. And even a few months ago, I was told when I first went to have my scan of my back and the issue that I had with it, I was told that I wouldn’t be playing at the Olympics and I wouldn’t be playing at Wimbledon.

It’s been really hard. Physically, pain wise, I feel bad. Physically, I can obviously can go on the court and perform at a level that’s competitive. We’re close to getting in the medal rounds here, that’s okay. But the pain and discomfort in my body is not good. That’s also why I’m happy to be finishing. Because if I kept going and kept trying, eventually you end up having an injury potentially ending your career. So, I know that now is the right time” – he added.
Murray already stated that he will stay in touch with tennis in the coming years, perhaps helping young talents from his country. The 3-time Grand Slam champion made modern tennis history and his experience will be invaluable to young players.
Murray cheers on Djokovic
The Scotsman also said he would like Novak Djokovic to win the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. The Serbian champion will face Lorenzo Musetti in the second semi-final. “Yeah look, I think obviously at times it’s been difficult for him because Nadal and Federer — before Novak became the best player in the world and in terms of titles and everything, the best male player, he’s won the most Grand Slams and had an unbelievable career — that Rafa and Roger were so loved and had a brilliant rivalry,” said Andy.

He continued: “I think Novak has huge support around the world, but yeah I think at times it has been difficult for him to not maybe feel the same support from the crowd that Rafa and Roger got, but you know he still does have massive support around the world. I think he’s extremely well-respected, not just in tennis but in world sport because of all of his achievements. And I think at times he’s thrived on that as well, when the crowd hasn’t been behind him he’s played some of his best tennis and his best matches when that hasn’t been the case.”
