South Carolina’s Dawn Staley poses with Serena Williams while sending out wishes to Sha’Carri Richardson for winning silver at 2024 Paris Olympics
Dawn Staley is taking a short break from coaching, as she’s in Paris cheering for Team USA. The South Carolina coach was a part of the presidential delegation for the opening ceremony and has since been active on social media, giving shout-outs to medal winners and documenting her trip.
On Saturday, Coach Staley shared another event on her Instagram. In June, she was one of four coaches selected for the third edition of Nike Athlete Think Tank. The group convened in Paris for a round of discussions with tennis legend Serena Williams, and the coach shared the pictures with a caption:
“#nikeathletethinktank you never know who you might meet, see, converse, learn, grow and enlarge your circle! Congrats to @itsshacarri @__melissaj19 on medaling!! We are proud!”
She also included a video from the women’s 100m track event, where Team USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson won silver, while Melissa Jefferson won bronze. This wasn’t her first time meeting Richardson, as Staley had met her outside the track.
“Coach there’s a GOAT here. No Coach there’s a goat here!! @itsshacarri In my @aflac voice…🤣🤣🤣,” she wrote with her selfie.

Dawn Staley delves into difficulties of coaching star talent
Team USA women’s basketball has been on a victory run in the Paris Olympics as they seek their 10th gold medal. However, they have been in a few close-call games, especially the one against Belgium.While fans criticized the coaches, led by Cheryl Reeves, for failing to nail the perfect line-up, Dawn Staley came to their defense. She wrote on X:
“Y’all, just so y’all know it’s not easy coaching this talent filled team …. virtually impossible to play 12 players. It’s all about combinations. Managing combinations within the game is extremely difficult. Let’s be patient with the process. And trust our coaches!”
The Team USA roster is filled with All-Star talent like Diana Taurasi, Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Brittney Griner and more.
Working a line-up around them can be tough, and coach Staley has first-hand experience in it when she coached the USA to gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She also won the Olympic gold thrice as a player, in Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004).
