Sir Andy Murray was knighted after proving his talents on the tennis court. But, with the star pulling out of the men’s singles competition at Wimbledon, many are wondering whether this could be the end of his sporting career. Perhaps the former Olympian could look to his other venture for his future career; Murray and his wife Kim are the owners of the five-star Cromlix House Hotel, near Murray’s hometown of Dunblane, Scotland.

The couple, who have been married for seven years and share three children, bought the historic property for almost £2 million in 2013 and selected it as the venue for their wedding two years later. It boasts 10 bedrooms, five luxury suites and a one-bedroom gate lodge; each decorated in sumptuous style with nods to the Scottish surroundings and appointed with luxuries like 32in TVs hand-painted freestanding gold, silver or bronze baths.
The last few years have been a time for change at Cromlix. The couple announced in 2023 that they were closing the doors of the hotel for a three-month renovation that was overseen by Mrs Murray. At the time, it was said she had vowed to personally pick out little extras like the wallpaper and toiletries. The intention, they revealed, is to make the hotel more ‘reflective’ of their personal tastes.

Speaking to the Times, Kim said: ‘We have owned Cromlix since 2013 but its connection to our family extends back far beyond that. In 1982 Andy’s grandparents, Roy and Shirley Erskine, held their silver wedding anniversary at the hotel… Golden and diamond celebrations followed, as well as blessings, birthdays and three Murray weddings — one of which was our own in 2015.’

She continued: ‘This is very much a family affair and I am delighted to be getting involved in overseeing this makeover, selecting wallpapers, toiletries, logos and everything in between, so that Cromlix becomes more reflective of our tastes and attitudes.’ The refurbishment plans include upgrades to bedrooms, bathrooms and communal areas, including the restaurant, and improvements to the grounds.

The couple announced the closure on the hotel’s Instagram account, writing: ‘Today, we have said goodbye to our final Hogmanay guests and are closing our doors for a 3 month period of refurbishment.’
The hotel, which features a chapel and a private loch, has an Albert Roux restaurant and has won a string of hospitality industry awards since it was acquired by Murray. Homemade needlework in the holy room was done by Mary Hay Drummond, wife of Colonel Arthur Hay Drummond who owned the estate from 1901 until his death in 1953. Stained-glass windows, drums and silver-mounted bagpipes adorn the chapel. The couple unveiled the results of the renovation at the end of last year.
